REGINA - The panel charged with reviewing natural gas rates in Saskatchewan says the province should help cushion the burden of a price hike.
The Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel has approved a proposal from SaskEnergy to raise the price from $6.57 to $8.71 per gigajoule.
The move, effective October 1, would cost the average residential customer about $21 more per month.
But the panel says the provincial government should consider providing some relief to lessen the impact of the price hike.
The panel says the magnitude of the increase will have a disproportionate effect on low-income earners and those on fixed incomes, like senior citizens.
Ken Cheveldayoff, the minister responsible for Crown Corporations, says rebates might be an option, but he thinks it would be better to look at something like broad-based tax relief.
