CIVIC CENTRE
Runners, race-walkers, wheelchair users and parents pushing baby strollers will tackle a variety of distances Sunday at the Labour Day Classic. The 35th annual event, which starts and finishes at the Civic Centre, features seven individual categories, from a children's one-kilometre fun run to the 17-mile signature race, as well as a 3 X 3-mile relay. Last year's event incorporated a five-kilometre run, which is ideal for beginners. "I think that's generating some interest," said Jackie Stokes, an event organizer. The Labour Day Classic was formerly known as the Prince George to Boston Marathon, which covered a 17-mile route from Salmon Valley to Spruceland. Many runners use the race as a tune-up to prepare for fall marathons around B.C. Last year, Cormac Hikisch of Smithers won the 17-mile men's race in 1:42:48 while Paige Howat of Prince George was the fastest woman over the same distance with a clocking of 2:04:19. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with the 17-mile race. This will be followed by the kid's fun run at 9:15 a.m., and the 8.5-mile and five-kilometre races at 9:45 a.m. The post-race banquet is at 12:30 p.m. Participants can register up until Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. during package pickup times at the Civic Centre.
