CARNEY HILL
Those hoping for a return of the gospel tent to the VLA neighbourhood can shout Amen. The multi-denominational church group that hoisted the first Christian outreach tent in late July moved their plans for an encore up by several months. The mission there is just too strong, said lead organizer Gerry Eppinga, a travelling evangelist who lives in Prince George including a recent stint living in the troubled VLA neighbourhood. "I just felt in my heart to have another meeting right away," he said. "It is a big city, not a small community, there is easily the opportunity to set it up a number of times to reach people. We want to put a focus on our own community when we can, in addition to the travels we do." It was set up for four days of church services during the last weekend of July and this time they will run three days, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday anyone can attend at 6:30 p.m. on the grounds of Carney Hill school. "There are several active Christians who live right in the VLA and we want to reach out to them so we can develop leadership not only through things like our tent meetings, but some ministry from within," Eppinga said. "This isn't just about our ministry; we have to work together." Eppinga said it was powerful to him to see so many area churches combining forces to share the tent meeting event. He heads the Return To Jesus Christ Ministries and Christ For First Nations and he listed the partners as Prince George City Church, Riverside Community Church, All Nations Pentecostal Church, New Life Christian Centre, St. Michael's Anglican Church street ministries and Calvary Church. He also said the community members of the VLA were fine partners as well, helping set the large tent up and take it down at the end without anyone asking. There are systemic troubles in the VLA, he said, but there is also kindness and a strong spirit. The tent services are only trying to draw that out all the more.
