KAMLOOPS, B.C. - A First Nations community in Interior British Columbia is floating a plan to turn pine-beetle-infested wood into wood pellets.
The Whispering Pines band in Kamloops says purchasing a mill to turn the wood into wood pellets could create 200 jobs.
Chief Mike Lebourdais says the plan would require a $30-million investment.
Lebourdais says he has meetings scheduled over the next few days with the provincial forests minister and the Kamloops mayor.
He says the plan makes sense with all the wood just sitting there not being used, and it could serve as an alternative energy source.
Lebourdais says it would also offset the job losses suffered after Weyerhaeuser closed its sawmill and sold its tree farm license.
