Darryl David Basil, 27, was sentenced Wednesday to 216 new days in jail on pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking, uttering threats, breach of probation and other charges.
Two years of probation will follow.
Crown counsel said a global sentence of 10 months, or about 300 days, would be appropriate. However, Basil had been in custody since July 16. He was given the customary double credit for this dead time in remand, and that was how his sentence was reduced to the 216 days of new time.
On April 8 Basil breached probation terms by failing to report as required. On May 17 he uttered threats to a man at the needle clinic downtown, court was told.
On June 28 police arrested Basil over an outstanding matter. A search turned up 40 tabs of the drug ecstasy, one container of 2.9 grams of cocaine and another with 2.1 grams of cocaine inside, Crown counsel said.
On July 16 Basil violated release conditions not to go to George Street by returning to that area. A search turned up a small quantity of cocaine, drug paraphernalia and $699 in cash. Basil was originally charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking in connection with this incident, but on Wednesday he pleaded guilty to the lesser and included offence of simple possession of a controlled substance, court heard.
In his statement to the court before sentencing, Basil apologized for the threats he made to the man in the May 17 incident.
All items seized were ordered forfeited to the Crown.
Probation conditions include a requirement to attend counselling for drug abuse and a ban on visiting the area bounded by Second Avenue, Victoria Street, Fifth Avenue and the Fraser River. An exception to the ban was made for visits to the probation office in the courthouse building and for visits to the needle clinic. Basil must leave the area five minutes after stopping at the needle clinic.
Basil is banned from possessing firearms or other weapons for 10 years.

This is a friggen JOKE!
This guy is obviously a drug dealer (I don't think he could consume 40 tabs of E himself)
He is violent(most people on the streets don't make threats unless they follow through with them)
He is a repeat offender (obviously in for his second time around as he was on probation AND he breached it so I don't think his mind or attitude has changed muc)
And they think sticking him away for 6 months is gonna cure him this time. Gimme a BREAK. I guess they think he's better now because he apologized.
Oh and my very favorite part was that an exception to his big 3 block ban was made for visits to the needle clinic! Don't even get me started on the needle exchanges. That was DEFINATELY a bleeding heart invention. Makes me sick. We have little children dying every day because their medical condition isn't covered by the govt but the friggen addicts needles are?? Does this seem &@%$ed up to anyone else????

jlady- Settle down! It's just a joke! Everyone knows that this guys' name is in the paper all the time. He will never learn so all we can do is hope someone takes him out when he gets out. Seems like that's the only thing that works for sure. If you see him call crimestoppers, that seems to work pretty good.

I'll just sit outside the needle exchange I'm bound to see him there. Better stay in my jeep though. I kinda like my tires...I could always bring my 303 but I'D go to jail for that.

It doesn't matter if this guy is put away for 121 years, there is always going to be someone willing and able to take his place. After he gets out he will run his little show from a safe distance and hence be free from the prying eyes of his parole officer/social worker. We can only hope that after a few years, he will bite off more than he can chew and either run for greener pastures or end up floating down the Fraser like the rest of his brethren.

How come?
written by Thoughtful , August 28, 2008 (09:14:52 PM)
How come don't the government build a prison high above the Arctic Circle? If a prison was located 250 miles from civilization, you would not have to worry about escapees. The place could be located near a diamond mine, where detainees could learn to work again, or have the heat turned off in their cells, their choice... Choice food would be made by Purina and other like minded manufacturers. But this is Canada, ...
