A woman is in critical condition in Vancouver hospital after a pair of suspicious fires in Bear Lake late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
The woman's children, who were not in the home at the time of the fire, are apparently unharmed.
"Child services has been contacted to ensure they are safe, and they were not in the house at the time of the fire, which is the most important point -- they are OK," said RCMP spokesman Const. Craig Douglass
The Bear Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to the first fire at a vacant residence on Panda Street at about 10:45 p.m. Monday. They extinguished that blaze only to be called back at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday to fight a fire at the house next door, which had someone inside.
"Bystanders pulled an adult female out of the fire," said Douglass. "There were no other occupants in the house at the time of the fire."
Investigators were on-scene Tuesday afternoon to try to determine how the two fires started, but the structural remains first need to be made safe for them to enter.
"Just based on the sheer nature of the coincidence, we have to have suspicions," Douglass said. "There are a lot of different avenues to investigate."
