DAHL CHAMBERS
While there has been much critical press lately concerning RCMP Supt.; Dahl Chambers, the Northern John Howard Society is concerned that too many of the comments have been personal in nature and fail to take into account his track record as a senior law enforcement officer. It has been our experience that he is strongly committed to his professional role and to working with the larger community to address the problem of crime. One excellent example of Supt. Chambers leadership has been in the detachments participation in the Prolific Offenders Program. This is an integrated approach by law enforcement, health, corrections and other players to work with the relatively small number of offenders who are responsible for the vast majority of crime. It seems to be paying off, judging by the dramatic decrease in crime rates in the first two quarters of this year as recently reported in The Citizen (Crime stats down: Aug. 21). The support from Supt. Chambers and his team has also been instrumental in helping our organization to offer programs that reduce the risk of recidivism. For instance, we work in partnership with the local RCMP to deliver the Cops and a Card program (to reduce domestic violence) and the Prostitution Offender Education Program (to reduce exploitation of sex-trade workers). Both make Prince George a safer, better place for all. Supt. Chambers also contributes to the ongoing work of our agency as a member of our board of directors. Of course, we take no position on his offices internal problems. Rather, we urge fair-minded citizens of this region to leave to the RCMP supervisors and city administrators the continued handling of internal disciplinary matters, and to instead focus on how we can hold on to a police leader who has demonstrated his value to this community. -- Leslie Webb, president, and four other members of the board of directors, Northern John Howard Society George Harding, executive director, Northern John Howard Society
