DAWSON CREEK
The Crown recommended a four-year sentence Thursday for John Robert Coulson, 35, who pleaded guilty July 29 to assault with a weapon and uttering threats. Prince George provincial court judge Michael Gray reserved his decision on sentencing until today. On July 12 Coulson got into a dispute with a man in Dawson Creek and attacked him with an axe, yelling he would kill him. He cut the victim's thumb off and injured fingers, court heard. In his victim impact statement, the man said he was now unable to write or work with machinery, and is losing $3,000 a month income from being out of work. The pain from the injury is unbearable, and it interferes with sleep at night, court was told. "I thought this man would kill me with the axe," the man said in the victim impact statement. Crown counsel has also called for a ban on owning firearms and other weapons.
