HALIFAX - The Nova Scotia government says amendments to the province's environmental assessment regulations will make them clearer and better protect the environment.

The changes will give people more time to offer input during reviews of development projects.

Environment Minister Mark Parent says the amendments will help meet the objectives of the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act.

Parent says the changes come following public consultations in 2004 that showed a need for amendments.

The amendments took effect today and will give the public 30 days to comment on a project, extend the overall review period to 50 days from 25 and require more projects to undergo environmental assessments.

Energy projects will also require a more comprehensive review if they have the potential to produce higher levels of greenhouse gases and air pollutants.
