HALIFAX - Department of Transportation officials will spend the day assessing damage caused by torrrential rain and flash flooding during the weekend in northwest New Brunswick.
Doris Blanchard, regional co-ordinator for emergency measures, says the weather situation has stabilized with only light rain in the area.
He says a state of emergency will remain in effect to keep people out of the flood affected areas along Highway 205, outside the villages of Saint Francois and Connors near the borders with Quebec and Maine.
Sunday a military helicopter was able to evacuate 74 people from cottages isolated by two major breaks along Highway 205 - all have since returned to their homes.
Blanchard says one damaged piece of the road has been fixed, but he says damage to another area about 19 kilometres outside Saint Francois is "unbelievable."
Officials say waters washed away a stretch of the highway leaving a hole 110 metres long and about 10 metres deep, something that will likely take weeks to repair.
