DAWSON CREEKKIN CENTRE
The champions of the Prince George Senior Lacrosse Association won't get to play for this year's senior C provincial lacrosse championship. The estimated $7,000 cost of the trip to Kelowna and time away from from work ruled out that possibility for the guys who wield the sticks for the Shooters Pub Devils. As much as the Devils had hoped to try to win back the senior C title they held in 2006, the money issue was too large a hurdle to overcome. "We're not going, guys would have had to take three days off work," said Devils coach Neil McIntosh. "They wanted us to play Friday morning at 11 and if, per chance, we got to the final, it would be Sunday night at 6. So nobody on the team was too upset about not going. "It's too bad, because our season goal was to make it to provincials, but we'll stay here and have some fun in our last games of the year." The Devils will be running the floor of the Kin Centre as part of the six-team Rio Tinto Alcan Cup Senior Invitational tournament, Aug. 15-17, the same weekend as the Fred Doig Championship Trophy will be handed out at the provincial tournament. The alternate choice is good news for local lacrosse fans, who were thoroughly entertained by the Devils as they were pushed to the limit in a tough seven-game PGSLA final series against the BX Pub Bandits. The Bandits won the opener and twice fight off elimination to force a seventh game. "That was really good for lacrosse here," said McIntosh. "It was a a fun, very physical series, and I'm glad we came out on the winning end. They're a good club who fought back and took advantage of the situation they were given at times." The Devils and Bandits will join their PGSLA counterparts -- Little Caesar's/Tabor Sports Pub Assault and Cap-abilities Stylers -- as well as the Regina Heat of the Prairie Lacrosse League, and Vancouver Burrards of the West Coast Senior Lacrosse League in the 10th annual Alcan tournament. The Devils will missing two of their top guns -- Blake McIntosh and Kiel Davoren -- for the duration of the tournament. McIntosh is taking a vacation and Davoren can't get time off his job as a Dawson Creek paramedic. "I think Blake is tired and wants a break," said Neil McIntosh. "If we would have made provincials he would have worked around it to get there." The tournament starts Friday, Aug. 15 with a Devils-Bandits championship rematch. The final is tentatively set for Sunday, Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets will be $5 for each day of the tournament.
