PGX opens doors with exhibits, midway, acts
The 96th annual Prince George Exhibition opens today and runs through Sunday. This year there's the usual things, such as Heritage Lane, the agricultural displays, the 4-H barns, exhibitors in the Kin Centres, local entertainment on the community stage and the PGX Idol, but there's also two famous comedians and two tribute bands on the main stage in Kin 1. This year also sees the return of West Coast Amusements midway. Now to add even more to the spirit of celebration, the PGX invites the public to kick up their heels at the Stetson Round Up dance Saturday, which offers up two top Canadian comedians, Mike MacDonald and Matt Billon, followed by 4 on the Floor, the local country rock band, including well-known singer/songwriter Rick Stavely as lead vocals and guitar, Terry McKay, drums, Jason Dube, guitar, and Darren Braun, bass. Stavely will be flying to Nashville next week to record three new songs he will debut at the Evening of Pink on Sept. 20 at the Civic Centre, a fundraising event for cancer, and the preview of this talented musician will be showcased at the Stetson Round Up Dance. Stavely, who lives in Prince George, has a few songs on the airwaves nationwide right now, It's All Yours, Dying to Live Like That, and Every Day That You're Not Here. 4 on the Floor has been around for a couple of years, with Stavely jumping on the band wagon about four months ago. The members of the group have all played together off and on over the last 20 years and the history of knowing each other for so long makes for good music. Stavely said he's focussing his style of music on Americana right now, a loose subset of American folk music, which ranges from roots-based bluegrass to alternative country, gospel, blues, and others. "I'm big into the Americana charts around the world right now," said Stavely. "I'm starting to write more around some Americana just because I've got the bases in Japan and Germany, Netherlands and Denmark, Australia, and New Zealand." Right now Stavely is working on a song with his brother, Gary, called Talk About It, which will be released in February. During the Stetson Round Up dance, 4 on the Floor will focus on country rock and classic rock music. "We'll be doing Rick's three songs for sure," said Terry McKay, drummer for the band. "We're heavily leaning towards country with classic rock towards the end of the night. We do all the modern country." The band will cover artists like Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Steve Miller, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, then Matchbox Twenty and 3 Doors Down, added Stavely. "We mix it up really good," said Stavely, with a big grin. Tickets are $15 on site during the fair. Ticket holders may access the fairgrounds after 6 p.m. on Aug. 9 to attend the dance, without paying admission. Kin 1 doors open at 7 p.m., comedians begin at 7:30 p.m. The dance goes from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
