The local Wal-Mart will be participating in a nationwide fundraising campaign to raise money for Canadian Red Cross disaster preparedness and response. This is the third year the Red Cross has joined with Wal-Mart Canada for the fundraiser. "Each year has been more successful than the previous," fund development co-ordinator Sharan Dhillon said. She said the Prince George store hopes to raise $6,000 and the region is aiming to raise $35,000. The Canada wide goal is $1.5 million. "We've got about six stores in our region ... and that includes Prince George, Quesnel, Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Terrace and Whitehorse," Dhillon said. "And so all the funds that are raised in that region, or the northern BC/Yukon region, will stay there to help ensure that the Red Cross will be there when disaster strikes in that region." Customers will have the option of adding $1 to their purchase to go towards stockpiling relief items such as blankets, toothbrushes, soap, toiletries and trained volunteers to help when natural disasters hit. The campaign starts today and runs until Aug. 31 in 292 Wal-Mart outlets across Canada.
