Alyx Treasure has a tough act to follow -- her own. Fresh from winning the high jump event two weekends ago at the Canadian junior track and field championships, Treasure will attempt to reach even greater heights this weekend in Quebec. The 16-year-old Prince George Track and Field Club member will wrap up what has been her busiest season when she competes in the Royal Canadian Legion national juvenile championships in Sherbrooke, Que. At last years Legion national championships in Oromocto, N.B., in the 15-year-old division, Treasure won a gold medal in high jump, a silver medal in triple jump and was part of a bronze-medal run by Team B.C. in the 4x100-metre relay. Treasure also set a new Canadian record in the high jump with her leap of 1.76m. This season, Treasure cleared 1.80m at junior nationals and went as high as 1.82m at the high school provincial championships. Shes fit and we kept her flexible, but we didnt jump her too much in the days leading up to the junior nationals when she won the high jump, said Prince George Track and Field Club coach Tom Masich. Things are pretty good but shes tired and has a few aches and pains. This is her 12th meet, and its a pretty high-pressure meet coming up. Shes a 16-year-old girl and still reasonably frail of body and its a lot of work. More so than the physical aspect is keeping the mental focus. Its been a big schedule for her. Treasure will compete in the 16- and 17-year-old division and Masich figures her stiffest competition will come from B.C. athletes Holly Parent of Victoria and Emma Kamota of Richmond. Parent has already cleared 1.80m this year. Treasure will have one day of orientation in Sherbrooke today, followed by a training clinic on Friday. The meet runs Saturday and Sunday. She will remain in Sherbrooke Monday and Tuesday for special events and tours that will involve all athletes at the meet.
