Hockey job, sure, but not with Kings Print E-mail

He has been a coach with both junior hockey teams in his hometown. Stewart Malgunas is now an ex-employee of both the Prince George Cougars and Prince George Spruce Kings but he's not slamming the door on a possible return to local junior hockey in the future.
"I think if the opportunity was right and things were right in my life that I would put my name back in the fold," he said. "I love coaching and I feel I have something to offer, but at this time it's just not the right fit."
On Friday, the 38-year-old Malgunas resigned as associate coach of the B.C. Hockey League's Spruce Kings. He had been behind the Kings' bench since November of 2006 but stepped down for what he called "personal reasons." He had also been interested in eventually becoming head coach of the Kings and said it didn't look like it was going to happen.
Malgunas was also an assistant coach with the Western Hockey League's Cougars from May of 2003 to early November of 2006. Along with head coach Mike Vandekamp, he was dismissed by Cougars owner Rick Brodsky.
The Spruce Kings will be led again this coming season by Ed Dempsey, who fills the dual role of head coach and general manager. He will be in the final year of a two-year contract, and an extension is a possibility.
Dempsey's coaching practices had been under investigation by the club. But, Spruce Kings president Darcy Buryn said Friday the club's internal review indicated that the concerns of players represented only a "difference of opinion" regarding Dempsey's methods.
The Kings will be hunting for Malgunas's replacement, while Malgunas himself will be pursuing other business opportunities. He also plans to stay involved in local hockey at the minor level.
"I have a daughter (Jayden) who's hopefully going to be playing on the peewee triple-A team," said Malgunas, a former Spruce Kings defenceman who played 129 games in the National Hockey League for Philadelphia, Winnipeg, Washington and Calgary. "She obviously has to make it first. It would be kind of nice to maybe get to help out a little bit with her team and maybe see some more of her games. I'm obviously looking forward to that aspect. And also I'm the Success Through Development coach coordinator for minor hockey and the coach mentor. And as far as I know I'm still going to be doing my elite prep camp next year and also the Smithers hockey school with Dan Hamhuis. I'm staying involved in the game. It will always be a big part of who I am."
Local hockey fans will likely even see Malgunas in the Coliseum during Spruce Kings home games this coming season.
I'll still go out to all the Spruce King games and I will definitely wish the boys the best," he said.
Malgunas is the head instructor for the Spruce Kings summer hockey school, which begins today at the Coliseum. The camp runs until Aug. 22. At that time, Malgunas has said his duties with the Kings will be finished.
