VANCOUVER - A man is in Vancouver police custody after nine people were hit on the head with a hammer on Sunday.
The vicious spree happened on a street crowded with revellers several hours after the annual gay Pride Parade which attracted hundreds of thousands of people to the area.
Const. Jana McGuinness says the man also pointed an imitation handgun at a man who tried to subdue him.
The downtown spree began after the man fled a store without paying for some items.
Police say he then went to a lounge, where he hit six people, knocking one of them unconscious, then went to a nearby restaurant patio, where he hit two women and a man they were with who chased him.
As police flooded into the area, a number of people jumped the man police call "emotionally disturbed," and held him until the officers arrived.
Police have not released any information on the injuries.
