CLEARWATER, B.C. - A 78-year-old Clearwater, B.C. woman is in a Vancouver hospital with second-and third-degree burns to almost half her body after she was doused in gas and set alight.

The woman's dog has been put down after it too was set on fire in a similar fashion Friday.

RCMP say the woman's 51-year-old son is in custody.

He faces charges of attempted murder and cruelty to animals and will appear in court in Kamloops on Tuesday.

Police say the woman remains in critical condition.

They say it was the son who called for an ambulance.
