Carol Bobb might not be here today were it not for the actions of her service dog named Spud, a shih tzu who weighs all of nine pounds. Bobb, who suffered a stroke 10 years ago, has been confined to a wheelchair the past four years. A few weeks ago while sleeping at her townhouse, Bobb's bedroom had filled with smoke and her chair was on the verge of catching fire, which she blames on a troublesome charger. That's when her little hero sprung into action. "I woke up with Spud trying to dig a hole in my face," said Bobb, 57, who lives alone. "My chair wasn't in flames yet, but it was black smoke. I unplugged it and the end piece of the charger was so red hot that it burnt a hole in my carpet." Bobb would have been stuck in bed had her chair caught fire. Which is why she credits her tiny guardian for saving her life. "He's an amazing little creature," said Bobb, who became Spud's owner when he was five weeks old. He turns nine Aug. 28. The two are pretty much inseparable, with the exception of restaurants. A regular destination is Save On Foods at Spruceland, where Spud's favourite cashier is Chris Holowka. "He's quite the little gentleman," Holowka said. "He's a very unassuming, quiet little dog who sits there patiently and loves her dearly." After all these years, Bobb still marvels at her dog's intelligence, whether he's grabbing clothes from the dryer or fetching the phone. The latter came in handy during a mishap four years ago when Bobb broke her leg in three places after falling at the entrance of her bathroom. "I'm down and couldn't move, and knew it would be at least eight hours before one of my kids got off work and checked on me. So I asked Spud to get me a telephone. It took about three tries. He brought me shoes, he brought me his leash, but on the third try he brought me a telephone. "These little service dogs just make your life so much easier. And wonderful companionship too," added Bobb, who cannot use her right hand or leg. "Spud is my right hand. He literally makes a difference between me having to have a home care worker and being able to live completely independently."
