A Smithers woman could be charged with public mischief after being caught on tape making false allegations of an attempted abduction, according to RCMP. On July 18 at 10 a.m., RCMP responded to a report from an 18-year-old female that an unidentified man tried to pull her into a vehicle while she was on a routine break at her job. A search was conducted by RCMP but no vehicle matching the given description was found in the area. It was later discovered the allegation was false after video surveillance from the woman's employer showed there was no abduction attempt. "In the initial stages of the investigation, we had some doubt. And that was confirmed two days ago," RCMP Sgt. Ray Haugen said Friday. "The video surveillance showed that the incident did not occur as reported by her." Haugen said the investigation is still ongoing and the woman could be charged with public mischief for making a false allegation.
