EDAM, Sask. - A five-year-old boy driving an all-terrain vehicle on his family's farm in Saskatchewan has died.
RCMP say the boy was driving the four-by-four by himself when it rolled to the ground just after suppertime Thursday on the farm near Edam, about 200 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon.
A family member tried to help the child, said Sgt. Carole Raymond.
He was taken to a nearby health centre, where he was pronounced dead.
Raymond said she could not comment on whether the child had been wearing a helmet or describe the size of the vehicle.
The name of the boy has not been released.
Officers from the Turtleford detachment are investigating.
In Saskatchewan, a child must be 16 and have a valid driver's licence in order to drive an ATV on public roads and land.
But on private property, there are no restrictions.
Saskatchewan Government Insurance spokesperson Chris Clemett was shocked to hear the age of the boy who died.
"We certainly don't encourage anyone under the age of 16 to be operating an all-terrain vehicle," he said.
