The Prince George Regional Correctional Centre has about 20 more prisoners than its official capacity allows, according to provincial corrections branch spokesman Bruce Bannerman.
There are currently about 280 inmates, which is about 20 more than capacity.
However, "we have additional areas where we can house inmates within the facility beyond what's considered the official capacity," Bannerman added.
The extra space is found in the centre's medical observation area and some inmates are in segregated sections not considered part of the 261 beds reserved for the main population, he said.
And while he couldn't speak to Prince George specifically, Bannerman said jails around the province often house extra inmates in their intake areas as well.
Work on expanding the women's unit by 20 cells is underway, he noted. Construction started in May and is expected to be finished by next June.
The current PGRCC was opened in 1996 and has 132 cells for men and 19 beds for women in both cells and dormitories. The total inmate count at the centre is averaging 261, so the 20 new cells will reduce overcrowding.
"We're continuing to see a regular gradual increase in the counts within the province which means we're always having to accommodate more," he said. "So this is where we have some projects underway right now which are nearing completion that will add another 150 beds within the province."
In the meantime, he said staffing is adjusted as required.
"This has not been an overnight event," he added. "This is a situation that has been developing and which the branch has been addressing over a number of years."

There's a sheriff in Texas who should be hired to run the Prince George center, you would not need to worry about beds, but rather the weather, as the inmates would be sleeping out side under that sheriffs control and in tents at that, wanta be warm, git some fire wood boy, wanta eat, do some work der boy, wanna stay cool, work up a sweat der boy.

they went against society, have been charged "guilty". they """"used""" to forfiet all rights. So why does the tax paying, law abiding good general public have to pay for a criminal to have what they don't have.
Over crowded!!! who gives a rat-sass. I sure don't..as a tax paying citizen, one gets tired of the BS., let them sleep on the damm floor, and turn down the heat while your at it.
I never did like it they gave them the "hilton hotel", and have to pay hmmm..what was that 42 million?..and a school has do go without...just what gives here. Priorities are a little back asswards.

http://www.cnn.com/US/9907/27/tough.sheriff/

The tent city looks like a military camp in the desert, with thick canvas sleeping quarters spreading out in a remote area of Arizona.

The inhabitants, however, are not soldiers, but residents of an unusual, some say brutal, prison run by legendary lawman Joe Arpaio, called the toughest sheriff in the West.

For the Maricopa County sheriff, who opened the nation's largest tent prison in 1993, saving taxpayer pennies matters more than comforting convicted felons.

"We took away coffee, that saved $150,000 a year. Why do you need coffee in jail?" says Arpaio, patrolling the dusty, barren grounds. "Switched to bologna sandwiches, that saved half a million dollars a year."

Arpaio makes inmates pay for their meals, which some say are worse than those for the guard dogs. Canines eat $1.10 worth of food a day, the inmate 90 cents, the sheriff says. "I'm very proud of that too."

Inmates follow strict fashion and lifestyle guidelines. They are forced to wear old-fashioned prison stripes and pink underwear. Prohibited items include cigarettes, adult magazines, hot lunches and television -- except for his bedtime story reading, a self-styled literacy program broadcast nightly to the inmates."

I agree prisoners should have have education choices, a chance to better themselves behind bars. But where is the punishment, having to work hard, etc. They're supposed to be repaying a debt to society. Prison is supposed to be punishment. I agree with Sheriff Joe. His recidivism rate is ridiculously low.

yep break the law and you get 3 squares a day, free gym membership, paid to work extra curricular jobs outside, free schooling, free counsiling, pool tables, ping pong i think is also up there, either its cable and satellite on their 21 inch color tv's that get fixed asap when they fritz, a canteena to buy extras with moneys earned from working....wait...that sounds easier than my 45 hour work weeks paying the government 20% so i can struggle with more bills and cost of living skyrocketing....

yep screw em, make em bunk up, sleep on the floor, no cigs, no coffee, no mags, no tv, no pool table, no paid labor...then lets see if they wanna break the law again

I know of some guys who commit a crime on purpose just to go back to jail to get well fed, have some rest, get of the crack or whatever they are on for awhile, learn a few more crime tricks then go back out on the street until they decide they need another break from society.

it's for the criminals once again, more rights, remove controversial writing from this blog or edit it, so the criminals don't sue the paper for defamation of character...
