The North Cariboo Metis Association will receive a $7,000 boost from the provincial government to support an upcoming Metis cultural gathering, as announced Wednesday by Tourism, Culture and the Arts Minister Bill Bennett. The money is from the BC150 Celebration Grant program that supports the BC150 pillars of heritage, communities, multiculturalism, aboriginal people, and arts and culture. "Our province is full of fascinating stories, from the rich history and culture of British Columbia's First Nations, to our gold rush explorers and homesteaders, and on to our 21st century achievers," Bennett said. "These local BC150 celebrations help share our stories with each other and the world." On Nov. 15, the association will host the Edmonton Metis Dancers for a dinner and dance performance, in celebration of BC150 and Metis Day. To qualify for a BC150 grant, organizations must be non-profit, operate primarily for community benefit and have a voluntary, broad-based membership. Application deadline is Aug. 31. Grants to $10,000 are available through the Ministry of Housing and Social Development. For more information, visit www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/gaming/grants/bc150.htm
