QUEBEC - City officials claim pressure tactics taken up by Quebec City police officers are putting motorists at risk.
Since the fall, the police brotherhood has encouraged officers to issue fewer traffic tickets as they negotiate a new contract with the city.
But city officials told an essential services hearing on Wednesday that a recent study suggests traffic accidents have been increasing as the number of tickets decrease.
Using automobile insurance statistics from 2003 to 2005, when the last collective agreement was negotiated with police, a criminologist estimated there have been more than 100 accidents more than normal since the fall.
The police union denied its pressure tactic was putting the population in danger and accused the city of misleading the public.
