Re: Left turn decision will be final: gov’t (Citizen story July 8).
LeftTurnNow.com (a community action group of residents, workers and visitors) concurs with Hon. Minister Falcon that the left-turn decision will be final, but only if the decision is to put it in.
If they decide to not do it, we vow the issue will continue to come back again and again to haunt them. We appreciate that the government is doing its due diligence and is conducting a traffic study, however, if the traffic study somehow defies commonsense and says that a left-turn at this location would be unsafe (and yet it is not unsafe at other locations where highway traffic is much heavier, like at 18th Ave, Range Road and other areas on the south side of the bridge), we will be having that study very carefully scrutinized by professionals.
Public safety is of primary importance here as Dave Orr (the latest accident victim) can attest to. Ministry officials have already confirmed U-turns are not illegal on the highway at this location as per section 168 of the Motor Vehicle Act (see http://www.qp.gov.bc.ca/statreg/stat/M/96318_05.htm#section168).
The Simon Fraser Bridge project is being done to improve the transportation network for residents, workers and visitors. Including a left-turn into Spruce/Victoria/Ford Streets with the bridge project is a public safety benefit that will improve basic access and reduce driver frustrations for over 6,000 residents, workers and visitors who need this safe left-turn.
It can be included for under $500,000 and the bridge project will still be well within budget (see LeftTurnNow.com).
I encourage anyone who is concerned about this issue to go to www.LeftTurnNow.com and contact the bureaucrats and elected officials to let them know that you need this safe, user-friendly left-turn now!
