On Saturday July 26 at the College Heights location of Gingerbread Toys, 7086 Domano Blvd., children four years old and up are invited to take part in a playday at the store. (Anyone younger will require having his or her parent participate.) The special activity is a chance to paint and take home a 4” Breyer horse. There will also be opportunity to check out the new toys like remote-controlled “Morphibians” capable of driving on land and into water. The miniature kitchen sets “Kitchen Littles” come with appliances, food items, dishes and even a working toaster. Other activities and games are also planned to make the time spent there fun. It’s second only to being a “kid in a candy store”!! Parents can observe which toys are making the biggest impact and then enjoy the annual “Christmas in July sale” which begins today at both store locations.

Store numbers are 250-964-4356 for College Heights, or 250-962-4354 for the Hart Mall, or toll-free at 1-888-521-8697 (TOYS).

Business Anniversary

Downtown Prince George’s Bibles For Missions Thrift Store is celebrating its fifth anniversary Saturday, July 26th with a big one day sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Buy clothing by the bag, check the books for sale, and know that there will be blow-out prices on all puzzles and games. Throughout the day, customers will be served refreshments in appreciation for their ongoing support. The funds raised through this store support the Bible League’s work in providing bibles to people in Egypt. Read more about it at www.biblesformissions.org. Located at 1210 Third Avenue, the store number is 250-564-3345.

Community Garden
Before heading out to the garden centre, plan to attend interesting and useful complimentary information sessions this week at the Community Garden, located at 1540 Milburn Avenue. The topic for Wednesday July 23 at 7 p.m. is beneficial insects. Learn how to attract and shelter the bugs which can help the gardener and how to deter the pests. On Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. learn about some of the common herbs and their healing capabilities. Participants will help prepare a salve and get to take some home.

Fall Yarns

Already in stock at Darlene’s Yarns & Handwovens are the new-style yarns featured for fall. They’re finer weights of natural fibres in natural shades and hand-painted vibrant tones. Very special is a 100 per cent cashmere lace-weight yarn and a 100 per cent super wash wool also in lace weight. The new shipment of Noro yarns from Japan arrived with a price break courtesy of a strong Canadian dollar. Mirasol yarns are sumptuous and soft blends of merino, alpaca and silk. This fair trade company ensures that a portion of sales is returned to support schools and health care centres for shepherd families in Peru. Find out more about that at www.mirasolperu.com. Shop hours are Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. (to coincide with opening of the Farmers’ Market) until 2 p.m. Call 250-563-7872 to check stock or get assistance with knitting.

Successful BMO Kidz Art Dayz

The Two Rivers Gallery is delighted with the overwhelming success of their two day event this month July 11 and 12. Altogether 3,200 people came through the gallery which organizers describe as “a magnificent turnout!” Families participated and groups came together covering age ranges from babies to grandparents. More than twenty activities inside and outside the building kept everyone entertained. Two special highlights were creation of a colourful domed hideout and transformation of the boulevard greenery into “Wishing Trees” as children recorded their hopes and dreams along with some quite profound thoughts!

The gallery staff is especially appreciative of the participation by the
Bank of Montreal. Not only did the bank support them financially, many of their staff members and their families came out to help staff the activity stations and contributed to making the event fun for everyone.
