MILWAUKEE - Coast Guard investigators tracking the source of trash that washed up on the shore of Lake Michigan have at least one clue: a City of Milwaukee "No Dumping" sign.

The sign was in a trash pile that was part of the hundreds of kilograms of garbage that washed up this week in separate incidents on Michigan beaches.

Coast Guard spokesman William Mitchell says investigators have been going through the trash and contacting businesses that have anything to do with it.

Investigators ask that anyone who finds trash with addresses, company names or other identifying information take photos of it and call the Coast Guard.

Trash showed up Monday on a 16-kilometre stretch of shoreline near Manistee, Tuesday on private beaches near Holland and Wednesday at Muskegon.
