Wood heat is the best kind of heat in the winter time, and I agree, less admisions from it. How does the government think our ancientors kept themselves warm throughout the winter...wood, peatmoss, pelets, etc.

Well I am sorry, but if our government would have taken care of the pine beetle infestation when it started the majority of our forest would not be dead and would still be able to produce oxygen. So I like to think that I am helping out our province by burning the very trees that the government willing let die due to the infestation. At least I am making an effort to dispose of the wood, and if it is in my wood stove to keep my family warm through the winter, so be it.

Right on, ccurled01! I heard that rotting wood gives off methane gas, which is more harmful to the environment than CO2. Better to burn it to keep warm if this is the case.

Burning beetle killed wood would surely be a lot less toxic to your budget. The way the gas company and the government are gouging us, I wouldn't be surprised if many more like yourself take the same route. Cheers!

it doesnt magically go up 12 percent for no reason like our natural gas. oh thats right natural gas was trading at 40 percent the value it was 3 yrs ago so it only makes sense instead of getting a 60percent rebate to stay on par campbell raised it another 12 percent lovely

I wish I had a wood stove and could tell natural gas to go take a hike. Instead I'll be wearing heavy sweaters and socks all winter as I just can't afford higher bills. This winter is going to be terrible for people on fixed incomes. I'll be looking for as many ways as possible to coserve heat in my house.

OK so all 80,000 people in the city should burn wood this winter. Good time to invest in Vital Air - the guys that deliver oxygen tanks to emphysema sufferers. Cuz if we all burn would we won't be able to see the end of the street and add that pollution to all the vehicle, pulp mill and refinery emissions, plus all the crap spewing out of the BCR site and oh gee what a soup. We'll all be sick.

What kind of crap is it saying wood heat has no emissions. Every time my neighbour lights up their wood stove I have to slam my windows and doors shut because the obnoxious smoke fills the rooms in my house because it makes us cough. Sorry ... but the rustic campfire smell belongs at the cabin in the woods, not in a modern city and definitely not in my home.

Ccurle1 sure our ancestors heated with wood ... when there was one family living in a 10 mile radius ... or a community of less than 200.

Hi, Grog, your post illustrates exactly why the carbon tax and other punitive measures the government imposes are destined to backfire. The government is conducting a very short-sighted experiment and using us a guinea pigs, and I think it is disgusting how people are being exploited by the gas company and the government to fulfill their agendas, with no thought as to the consequences.

I completely agree with you in principle; however, the blame needs to be directed at the greed of the gas companies and government for forcing people to seek less costly measures to fulfill a basic need--to stay warm in winter. People are caught between a rock and a hard place because corporate greed is out of control.

I, for one, will place the blame for this atrocious and unnecessary situation squarely where it belongs.

Well said allniter! There's no more of they can't disconnect in winter, they can and do, People are going to be cold this winter. Don't you find it ironic that here is a natural resource that belongs to BC taxpayers, was sold to a Texas company (without our approval) and people are going cold because they can't afford it. Corporate greed and government betrayal and greed - that's how I see it. I worry about air quality too but if we had clean, beautiful air I'm sure Gordy would find a way to bottle it and sell to the highest bidder.

Indeed I do find it ironic that we're paying top dollar for something that belonged to us in the first place. I'm also old enough to remember the massive sales pitch that was put on for people to switch to natural gas because, according to the propoganda, it was "clean-burning", and incentives like gov't grants were given for people to switch from oil to NG. It started out as a really cheap source of heat, but boy did the price climb. As I mentioned some time ago, a lot of long-term homeowners feel like they got sucked in.

Hmmm, I wonder about the bottled air comment tho...seems Big Gord likes selling off our assets at fire-sale prices to the States to impress the big boys down there. He'd probably give that bottled air away to give a false impression of benevolence. Cows may come and cows may go, but in this goofy province, the bull**** goes on forever.

I feel the same struggles as you guys ... they built this neighbourhood and piped natural gas to all the houses and now they have us bent over.

Go with natural gas and they can levee, fee, carbon tax and raise rates all day long. Go electric heat, good luck with that - next thing they'll raise those rates.

So what's the alternative to stay warm? Wood. I am even debating a high efficiency zero emission wood stove.

I am still burning at that skank Carol Taylor saying it's our choice to live in the north and if that's what we want then we better get used to paying more carbon tax. What's the alternative? We shoehorn every living soul in B.C. into lotus land down south? So who minds the oil and gas industry, forestry, mining and hydro dams that fuel the provincial economy?

They are all so shortsighted and ignorant down there ....

Carole Taylor, yes (insert disdain). She left office right after that one, didn't she? Couldn't face the backlash, I guess. Her arrogance was astounding.

From the sounds of the other blogs I frequent, many average Lower Mainlanders are getting pretty fed up with the Socred/Liberals, too. I've gotten some feedback from some who realize that it's a different world up here, and that a great many of them are negatively impacted by the carbon tax as well. Then, of course, there's the Olympic fiasco. The next election might be quite interesting...

Lower Mainlanders are about to get hit with another fuel surcharge on BC Ferries rates. Northern routes are apparently spared According to the thread accompanying the story, they are NOT PLEASED. The article referred to BC Ferries as an "independent government body", whatever that means. This adds to the disillusionment among the average taxpayer there.

I sincerely hope voters stay fired up and join forces and VOTE, letting this government and future ones know they can and will be held accountable. I'd love to see Gordon and his cohorts have to "pay" to get into the Olympics like any other citizen.
