Columnist trapped in ideological straightjacket Print E-mail

Re: Climate change: ‘There ain't nothin’ we can do about it’ (Todd Whitcombe column July 14).
I was disappointed to read Todd Whitcombe's column, which was sadly misinformed and didn’t take into account any of the tough or meaningful action our government has taken on the environment.
Our government recognized the failed policies of the Liberal party, which led to Canada being almost 35 per cent above its Kyoto target by 2004.
That’s why we introduced our “Turning the Corner Plan” to reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution. Our plan will cut greenhouse gas emissions an absolute 20 per cent by 2020. For the first time in Canadian history, our government is requiring big polluters to reduce their emissions. This plan also has additional, tougher measures for the oil sands, and will essentially ban dirty coal-fired power plants, one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
On the international stage, history was recently made when all G8 countries were able to agree on a 50-per-cent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050. Leadership means going first, and that’s why under this government, Canada has committed not only to our 20-per-cent reduction by 2020, but a 60 to 70-per-cent reduction by 2050.
Finally, our government has been clear that by 2050, the developed world, including Canada and the G8, will probably represent no more than 20 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. When our government says we need participation by developing countries, this is not a philosophical position. This is a mathematical certainty. The fact remains that you can't get a 50 per cent cut from 20 per cent of emissions.
Canada is doing its part on the world stage to deliver real and meaningful action on climate change, including major investments with the United Nations and with the Asia-Pacific Partnership. We can’t turn back the hands of time on 13 years of Liberal inaction, but we can take action not just for today’s generation, but for future generations as well.
Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.
In closing, let me suggest that while The Citizen identifies Todd Whitcombe as a “political activist”, it falls short of noting that Mr. Whitcombe is a well-known “NDP political activist”, which may better explain his views to your readers, and perhaps explain as well, why Mr. Whitcombe most times, appears trapped in his NDP ideological straightjacket with his columns.

Sorry Mr. Harris, but when the Conservative and BC Liberal agenda is friendly toward big business at the expense of the little guy, the little guy has a tough time buying into the propoganda when the coffer runs dry. Perhaps if your respective governments provided real incentives instead of imposing punishing taxes and punitve policies the little guy might be more inclined to take your seriously.

We know waht you're selling, but we're getting too broke to buy.

Explain to us why the BC govt just sold a record $600 million in gas tenures then slaps a carbon tax on the working people of this province. If they as are concerned about climate change as they say they are then why encourgage gas exploration? The answer to that is.. $600 million buys alot of pavement for the lower mainland before the olympics. With campbell running this province im surprised he hasnt listed it on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

FSJ I'm not sure if you meant to ask a Federal Conservative politician about a Provincial Liberal (but quite conservative), government.

I do share your anger though about the BC Govt selloff (BC Hydro, BC Rail,...), ideology of our province. Very shortsighted in my view. Simply making decisions based on philosophy and ideology, and not practical, financial sound reasons, seems ludicrous to me.

Mr Harris' letter also seems typical of govt propaganda. I agree that planning for the future is absolutely necessary. I just always get a kick (not), when governments brag about 20% this, and 50% that by such and such a date, as if they have accomplished something already. Come on... claiming your government is 'clear' on a percentage 42 years into the future. 42 years!

I also fail to see the writer's agenda of pointing out Dr. Whitcombes political stripes. Does everyone not have political leanings or views? Are many, including Mr. Harris, not "..trapped in his (insert political leanings), ideological straightjacket..."? Seems kinda hypocritical to try to discredit the writer. Better to deal with his writings specifically. Other than one 'cherry-picked' line, Mr. Harris did not do that at all. He just went on to boast what his govt 'will' do in 12 to 42 years from now.

Quick question. Why is it extremely difficult to find any mention of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia on Mr. Harris' website? One has to 'dig down' from a tab, to find where it has brief mention, and that is from the Governor General's throne speech almost a year ago. Yet I see the 400th anniversary of Québec City proudly displayed on the main, home page.

Mike S, you were bang on as to the Mr Harris accusation of political ideology. Mr Harris should be careful when he clearly lives in a glass house on this one. 42 years!!!, I thought that was pretty funny.
