CHARLOTTETOWN - Prince Edward Island's government will spend $1 million on programs to help its citizens cope with the hikes in heating costs expected this winter.
Beginning Aug. 1, four new or amended programs for existing homes will be available through the province's Office of Energy Efficiency.
The province is offering to pay up to half of the home renovation loan for low-income earners who want to make their homes more energy efficient.
People who have an income of less than $15,000 can have 50 per cent of the loan covered, while those with incomes between $15,000 and $30,000 will see 50 per cent of their loans covered.
Meanwhile, homeowners who invest in renewable energy heating systems will be eligible under another loan program, to a maximum of $10,000.
The province is also offering a $300 subsidy for the purchase of high-efficiency oil-fired systems.
An energy audit must be completed before the homeowners are eligible for the programs.
