Local youth baseball affiliation will now face challenge Print E-mail

Prince George’s affiliation with Little League Baseball stretches back more than 50 years. The disqualification of a local team from the upcoming 11- and 12-year-old provincial championship tournament has sparked increased talk about whether or not the relationship should continue.
Marcel Belanger, manager of the affected club, said he would consider moving it under the umbrella of the B.C. Minor Baseball Association next season.
“Most definitely,” said Belanger, who broached the subject with Brian Kelly, Little League B.C.’s District 4 administrator, on Sunday night. “It has been kind of the topic of conversation around town as well. With minor baseball, you can tier your kids based on their skill level. There’s a triple-A (level), a double-A and a single-A so you could send three teams to a provincial (championship tournament) from one age group. And their provincials are later in the year so it suits P.G. weather. Their provincials are in August, where Little League is in July. So it’s kind of conducive to our weather and our situation up north.”
Belanger is a past president of the Prince George Youth Baseball Association and a current board member.
“There’s lots of talk about it,” he said. “Why the big dedication to Little League? I’m not sure. Executive members and the parent group -- not just my (team) parents but parents throughout the year this year -- have been talking about it. Maybe it’s something we should be looking into.”
Kelly, whose administrative error resulted in Belanger’s club being removed from the provincial tournament that starts Friday at Joe Martin Field, said he would advise local youth baseball people against joining the BCMBA.
“I would be disappointed if they chose to do that, based on my mistake,” he said.
“B.C. Minor is a good organization but my experience has been that teams that do go to B.C. Minor find it’s a completely different set of rules, regulations, and many of those teams return to Little League.”
