Morgentaler honour ‘unbelievable’ Print E-mail

I find it unbelievable that the Order of Canada, our nation's highest civic honor, which "recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation," and which has been awarded annually to those individuals who "have enriched the lives of others," would be presented to the controversial abortion rights activist, Dr. Henry Morgentaler.
In early February, when it was rumored that Dr. Morgentaler would be receiving this distinguished award, there was a loud public outcry. The Globe and Mail conducted an online poll asking the question "Should Henry Morgentaler receive the Order of Canada?" Out of over 300,000 respondents, 92 per cent responded "No," while only eight per cent said, " Yes. "
Shortly after, on Feb. 20, the list of recipients for 2008 was released by the Governor General's Office, the office responsible for granting this award. Henry Morgentaler's name was not included.
However, on July 1, without any advanced notice, the Order of Canada was presented to Dr. Morgentaler. It has been revealed since, that the members of the Advisory Council, who approve the selection of recipients, were themselves divided and could not arrive at the traditional unanimous vote. It was reported that Chief Justice, Beverley McLachlin, chair of this committee, made the decision to break with tradition and to go instead with a simple majority vote.
This decision to award the Order of Canada to Dr. Morgentaler, especially in this underhanded manner, has debased and disgraced all that this award stands for. Instead of being a force for unity and pride, it has caused division and dissension.
To recognize and honour a man whose life work has resulted in the death of more than two million unborn babies, the most vulnerable of our society, and in the emotional and physical harm to untold numbers of women, hardly seems to embody all that is good and noble and honourable in our country.

I respect Laura's letter but I absolutely disagree with her. It is very clear that the abortion issue has two sides. Pro choice is clearly about the choice of the individual which I think is the right of every free woman in Canada. Anti abortionists feel its wrong because they feel life begins at conception. So they feel its murder. I would like to see a national referendum so Canadians as a whole can decide the issue. I would accept majority rule.

It's all about choice

We all have a right to our opinion. He deserved the award and those that wish to object, can, but don't sully the award because of ones point of view.

What

Just what defines 'right from wrong' for folks? I'd like to believe that there's actually clear absolutes for all of mankind on this sicko planet of ours. Tell me, if abortion isn't murder, why should someone stop when this so-called fetus is coming out a woman's womb?Just born even. Why should things be any different only a second after being birthed?? So if it's 'eliminated' seconds prior inside it's okey-dokey,...once outside, considered murder by us. Gee, and to think that this wonderful country of ours doesn't have a single law against abortions right up until 9 months full-term. A woman just has to find the 'right' doctor and hey, business as usual, get 'er done right at 9 months, fully developed and all. If only both women, men and teenagers truly researched this area, for instance, how abortion clinics literally have quotas to meet for baby fetuses as they are in cohoots with BIG name pharmacutical companies in the making/production of various things from cosmetic facial cremes to other items, perhaps more eyes would be opened in many ways. Folks have been hearing and soaked in PROPOGANDA for years, ie: fetus, not calling it an actual baby type mentality. As Hitler himself was quoted as saying, " You hear a lie long enough and loud enough, the people will believe it. They're also more likely to believe a bigger lie than a small one..." Sad to admit that that sicko was dead on.

Regardless of you agree or disagree with abortion, the choice is ultimatley left up to the person who is pregnant. To quote Hitler and give all of these vulgar personal definitions is not going to change that this Doctor, who has done right to the woman he has helped, received this metal.

We have our right to voice our opinions. However, when you question if abortion is right or wrong, you are also questioning the choice that we as women have and in turn are also saying that you want that choice taken away from us. It is a choice that we are given, no woman should be forced to carry a child if she cannot do it.

I bet when you try walking up Laura's drive way she jumps out and makes you march, or she'll blow you up. Just like a religious fanatic or terroeist would do, but she' entitled to her opinion. So I guess i dont mind the idea of going back to the stone age and just bonk chick over the head when we want a date huh, then they wont be so damn loud anymore,,,i'm being sarcastic again. So girls dont be afraid i'm not a terrorist or a fanatic, you not going to get bonked.

First off I dont think the government ( basically ALL males) has any right to say what a female does to her body during pregnancy.. second..it is a fetus in the womb..NOT A BABY.. third off.. the progression of the movement for women that Mr Morgentaler did with his work is without doubt worthy of the Order of Canada. In my 5 years of working with unwanted children ( largely abused in my findings) did I EVER hear of or see Mrs Fowlie offer any kind of assistance. Nice..so I see its Let the fetuses be born..but once they are out of into the world.. who cares ( of course unless the come to her church I am guessing) frinkin Religious hypocrites.
