BANFF, Alta. - A man is in custody after allegedly kidnapping and viciously assaulting two women early Sunday morning in the Rocky Mountain resort town of Banff, Alta.
Cory Lawrence Bitternose, 38, faces 11 charges including kidnapping, sexual assault, assault with a weapon, dangerous driving and possession of stolen property. Police say the attack began around 3 a.m. after the women were riding a bicycle home and accepted a lift home by a passerby.
The man quickly became aggressive, refused to drive the women home and then began punching them repeatedly.
When both women fled the vehicle, the man allegedly tried to run them down with the vehicle, which had been stolen from Calgary. But he ran into a large log instead.
The attacker chased the two women down on foot and dragged them back to the car by their hair.
One of the victims was able to escape again and call for help, and police caught the suspect about an hour later with the other victim in the nearby town of Canmore.
Bitternose, of no fixed address, is scheduled to appear in Banff Provincial court on July 21 to speak to the charges.
Three years ago, Banff was stunned by a brutal sexual assault that left a 21-year-old woman in a permanent vegetative state.
Albert Muckle, a drifter from Kenora, Ont., was eventually declared a dangerous offender and now faces life in prison for the attack.
The woman was raped, beaten and strangled with her purse straps before being left for dead in a public park.
