LABRADOR CITY - A bush plane crashed into the wilds of northern Labrador on Monday, leaving four people injured.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said two of the passengers were critically injured while two others escaped with only minor injuries. Rescue officials indicated the plane went down about 130 kilometres east of Schefferville, Que.

"Search and rescue technicians were on the scene, they were (air) dropped by a Hercules out of Greenwood, N.S.," said Jeri Grychowsky of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax.

She said Griffon helicopters from 444 Squadron in Goose Bay, N.L., and a Gander-based Cormorant chopper from 103 Squadron also took part in the rescue operation.

The injured passengers were air-lifted to Labrador City, N.L., for treatment.

The Beaver-model plane was run by Labrador Air Safari, a company affiliated with Air Saguenay that advertises remote fishing and hunting trips.

Air Saguenay vice-president Jean Tremblay said seven people, including four Americans and two fishing guides, were on board when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff.

"We know it wasn't a weather problem, but it is still premature to say what went wrong," he said.

According to Tremblay, the pilot and one of the American tourists were among the more seriously injured. He said both would be transferred to a Quebec City hospital on Monday night.

"Luckily, no one was killed," Tremblay added. "The rescue teams reacted very quickly."

The Transportation Safety Board said its investigators had begun gathering evidence but refused to speculate on the cause of the crash.
