The Mountie charged with an on-duty physical assault is a former Prince George RCMP member.
Cpl. Steven Chin began his RCMP career here in 1993 and was stationed in Prince George until his transfer to Fort St. James in 2001 then to Quesnel in 2005.
Chin is now before both the courts and an RCMP internal investigation after an altercation at the Quesnel RCMP detachment on December 16, 2007. It reached court for the first time last week.
It is alleged that Chin punched a suspect who was not physically resisting him while they were together in the detention area of the building. Quesnel RCMP spokesman Sgt. Gary Clark-Marlow explained the events leading up to the contentious moment, starting at about 2:50 a.m. that winter day on Dragon Lake Hill where police were called to a serious motor vehicle incident involving a single car.
The suspected driver, Tony Adams, then age 22, was apparently interfering with emergency personnel at the scene who were trying to treat an injured passenger. Adams is said to have attacked a police member who acted to intervene. Clark-Marlow said Adams needed to be Tasered by another Mountie to break up the fight with the first police member. Adams was then taken to the Quesnel detachment on suspicion of impaired driving and resisting a peace officer.
"During the preparation for the breath testing, there was a verbal exchange between Cpl. Chin and Adams during which Cpl. Chin is alleged to have struck Adams once in the face with a closed fist," Clark-Marlow said. "The blow resulted in superficial injuries to Adams."
As a result of that night, Adams was charged with Impaired Driving and Assaulting a Peace Officer. His trial date is set for Nov. 19, 2008.
Cpl. Chin was placed on suspension with pay. In addition to the court action, Chin awaits the results of the internal RCMP formal disciplinary process.

Wow. I wish I could get suspended with pay from my job. I haven't had a paid vacation for years. That so-called 'holiday pay' on my paycheck doesn't count, either, because the government takes it all in deductions, the greedy sots.

The whole concept of suspension with pay is a bad joke because as long as the money keeps rolling in, the naughty boy is completely unaffected by the concept of right and wrong anyhow. This is a blatant waste of tax dollars which renders the 'punishment' completey ineffective.

If he was suspended without pay, would everyone not be screaming about "innocent until proven guilty"? I have no idea who this cop is and feel no personal sympathy, but frankly, I don't think many in his situation are feeling like they are on vacation. Either way, I noticed one line in the letter that said "His trial date is set for Nov. 19, 2008". I'll wait.

I agree Mike. How quick people are to assume guilt. None of us were there. I too will wait to pass judgment until I hear full details. A criminal is "innocent until proven guilty" but people automatically presume the officer is guilty until proven innocent. The guy was drunk, trying to interfere with emergency personnel treating an injured passenger in an accident he was responsible for, had to be tasered to subdue him, but this officer is immediately considered guilty? Come on people!

Innocent until prove guilty

Good point Mike S. After all, we don't have the whole story here and who is naughty or nice may not be easily seen through our preconceptions. I think most of us when are exposed to news stories like this, automatically mentally associate them with other historic and recent episodes of police wrongdoing. However, to do so would be unjust to both parties.

I am not concerned about Cpl. Chin being paid to not work because he might well be innocent when all the cards are on the table. However, November trial seems a long way off.

Actually November is a quick trial date. Lawyers need to interview witnesses, write motions, etc. etc. I know this officer personally from when he was in PG and all I can say is he's a hell of a nice guy, a good cop, and I wish only the best for him.
