FIRST NATIONS
The process of creating a new vision for downtown Prince George began Tuesday when about 85 people attended a late-afternoon forum hosted by the Smart Growth on the Ground Initiative. Over the coming months, those interested will create a "shared vision" for the area, Smart Growth B.C. manager Shana Johnstone said, but not one that will sit on the shelf. "We want it to go somewhere," she said. "If we do a great job, it will get approved by council, so it's up to us to do a great job." Eight principles will guide the process -- emphasizing alternatives to the car, housing that meets the needs of the whole community, and buildings that are "greener, smarter and cheaper" -- are among them. Along with those principles is an overriding mandate to make the area more environmentally friendly in the face of climate change. Following a presentation on what the process is about, those who attended gathered at tables to carry out mapping exercises, discussion downtown issues and share their ideas for improving the area. Some of those thoughts had already been written onto a large sheet on a wall. More bike lanes, First Nations artwork, a performing arts centre, fewer pawnshops and cheque cashing stores were among the comments posted. The process will as much as two years with further workshops and events to follow and Smart Growth B.C. personnel doing research in support of the proposals raised in the interim. It's not too late to get involved. Those interested are urged to visit the Smart Growth B.C. website, smartgrowth.bc.ca for more information. The program exists under a partnership of the Design Centre for Sustainability at UBC, the Real Estate Institute of B.C. and Smart Growth B.C.
