MAYOR COLIN KINSLEY
Plaques were presented to city firefighters at the start of the city council meeting on Monday in appreciation of their efforts in combatting the major fires that broke out on the evening of May 26. The night began with the fire at North Central Plywoods. All the fire halls responded and all off-duty firefighters were paged when the call for the NCP fire was first issued. Extra fire dispatch people were also brought in to deal with the call volume from businesses in the BCR Industrial site and about 60 firefighters battled the blazes using all of Prince George Fire and Rescue's front line equipment. "Many worked the entire incident, some doing 24-hour shifts," said Mayor Colin Kinsley. Subsequent fires from the embers also erupted at Interior Warehousing, a CN Rail tie storage yard and a sulphur car, and there were spot fires throughout the BCR Industrial site. "And then, of course, as fate would have it, there was the fire at McInnis Lighting (downtown) and five firefighters responded by running on foot from the number one hall to McInnis Lighting to save that building," Kinsley said. A plaque was present to each of the fire halls. ------------- Council approved $25,000 from the major games reserve fund to support the work of a committee that would draft bids for hosting the 2015 Canada Winter Games and the 2012 B.C. Winter Games. --------------- An "international visitor delegation fund" will be established to pay for hosting dignitaries when they visit the city with $20,000 going into the fund each year. However, the money will be found from within existing funds rather than added to the tax levy. Much less than $20,000 is spend on such visits each year, city manager Derek Bates said. Council also approved a recommendation from the international linkages committee to provide information on the city's website in different languages. ----------------- Two variances were granted after no objections were raised during hearings on the items: - A request to waive the requirement for curb and gutter, underground electric power distribution, telecommunications and street light wiring at 2975 Charella Drive which has been divided into two residential lots. A reduced servicing standard is acceptable considering the existing level of service in the surrounding area, the applicant asserts. - To lessen the minimum lot width to 19.66 metres from 20 metres at 4961, 4703, 4723, 4739, 4755 and 4787 Martin Road and to waive the requirement to pave that section of the road. ------------ Council supported a request from the Hart Pioneer Centre to the liquor control and licencing board to include "patron participation entertainment" under its existing food primary licence. ------------- Council endorsed an application to the Northern Development Initiative Trust for $12,000 for the second phase of a marketing campaign to promote the Prince George region to U.S. travelers. ---------- Two rezoning applications were advanced to the public hearing stage: - to subdivide out a 4.2-hectare parcel at 7307 Giscome Road for a rural residential subdivision. A 2.4-hectare parcel of the same property was previously rezoned for the same use. - to establish a liquor store and 50-seat martini bar at the Westgate Shopping Centre. The proposal involves transferring the liquor primary licence for the old Rafters Pub, now a dental office, to the new site at the northwest corner of the Westgate property. ----------------- Final approval was given to opening a liquor store inside Marty's Pizza and Coffee Shoppe at 9912 Sintich Road near Highway 97 South. The liquor store at the Bonnet Hill Pub would be closed down and the licence transferred the location, which is also home to a gas station and convenience store and a souvenir store.
