TORONTO - A Canadian detained in China has been sentenced to 20 years in a Chinese prison, his lawyer says.
Jimmy Chen was arrested in China for commercial fraud and has been jailed in Fujian province since October 2006.
An Ontario Superior Court justice ordered last month that Chen be returned home to give testimony about a business dispute but his lawyer, Courtney Betty, says the federal government has shown no interest in the case.
Chen's arrest was related to a business dispute that began after he started a firm that imported electronics from a Chinese conglomerate.
Several lawsuits were filed in Ontario courts before Chen was invited to China to resolve the cases, which involve a dispute over approximately $2 million.
Chen was arrested as soon as he arrived in the country.
