The fences she was jumping were more than half her own height, but Jillian Gregory was showing no fear. If she was afraid, the nine-year-old from Quesnel was a master at cloaking her emotions at the Wood Wheaton Cadora horse show, held on the weekend at the Agriplex. Rockin Robin, her Sabino Welsh pony, handled the competition like a dream, carrying Gregory to wins in all three of her beginner 18-inch jumper classes. Her female mount also led Gregory to $50 in cold hard cash -- the first-ever profits of her equestrian career. Its really fun riding her, you can get away with lots of stuff while youre jumping, said Gregory, the youngest competitor in the two-foot-three training jumper class. Its scary going two-foot-three, but I can get it done. Gregory capped off the show jumping events by capturing the $50 stake, a open competition that featured older riders, most riding large horses. The horse and rider that completes the course with the fastest time without knocking over any rails claims the loot. I just galloped it, said Gregory. I went out there to have fun, and I did have fun. Thats the first time Ive won money. Prince George has brought out the best in Gregory and Rockin Robin on more than one occasion. She won the junior C hack event a year ago at the Bridlewood horse show and has since moved up three inches in her jumping competitions. I like show jumping, Gregory said. You get to learn new things and your pony gets to learn new jumps that you can use. Money was not the only reward for her efforts in the Wood Wheaton show. I won a saddle pad and a ribbon that says Champion on it, she said.
