VANCOUVER - The British Columbia government has launched a campaign to convince the public that its forest industry is an asset when it comes to fighting climate change.
Premier Gordon Campbell says the campaign will see industry leaders speaking to communities across the province to promote the idea. Industry members of the B.C. Forestry Climate Change Working Group have also committed to incorporate the message in their marketing.
Campbell says living forests store vast amounts of carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.
Also, he says using wood materials for things like construction produces a lower carbon footprint because of new manufacturing technologies such as wood-based bio-energy.
The provincial forestry industry has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2015 without the purchase of carbon offset credits.
The province's forest minister, Pat Bell, says builders need to start finding ways to use wood in their construction plans because it is more sustainable than steel, concrete or plastic.
"Wood is a far more environmentally friendly product to build with," he says.
"Everyone's looking for ways to reduce that footprint, and what better way to do than by consuming wood products?"
