Investigators of Saturday night's triple-fatality crash on Highway 16 near West Beaverly Road are still looking at speed, alcohol, erratic driving and lack of seatbelt use as factors in the collision, Const. Madonna Saunderson of North District traffic services said Monday. All three victims were in an eastbound car that crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with a westbound pickup truck. The three were pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and lone occupant of the pickup was taken to Prince George Regional Hospital, where treatment continues for injuries not considered to be life-threatening. The coroner is still working on the case and next-of-kin are still being notified. Names of the victims are expected to be released today, Saunderson said. However, the Village of Burns Lake issued a release Monday saying the three deceased were youths from that community. The mayor and council share with the families of this tragedy the deep sorrow of their loss, the release said. "This painful loss to the community is felt by us all, and we extend our sympathy to the family and friends of these valued youth," said Mayor Bernice Magee. "We are a small community, and this tragedy affects us all. "These family members were our neighbours, classmates and friends," she said. "We extend our offer to assist where we can to help during this difficult time." These three individuals exhibited a great benefit to the community, and their loss will touch every person in Burns Lake, Magee said. RCMP were called to the scene Saturday at 10:43 p.m. and the highway was closed in both directions for more than eight hours following the collision.
