BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union says it will ignore critics who say it helps boost food prices by embracing a binding target for the use of biofuels in transportation.
EU spokesman Michael Mann says if you don't have targets, you don't make progress in combatting climate change.
The EU is working on a plan that by 2020 will see biofuels account for at least 10 per cent of energy used by the EU's huge transportation sector.
It says voluntary targets have failed miserably so far.
The EU plan faces criticism.
The Brussels-based economic think tank Bruegel joined a global chorus of critics Friday in saying biofuels don't contribute to energy security, do not achieve cheap cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases and trigger higher food prices worldwide.
