MIAMI - Forecasters say Bertha has strengthened to a Category One hurricane in the open Atlantic, but poses no threat to land.
Bertha battered Bermuda earlier this week, knocking out electricity to thousands on the Atlantic tourist island. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Centre, it's the longest-lived July tropical storm in history.
Bertha became the Atlantic season's first hurricane.
As of about 5 p.m., Bertha's maximum sustained winds are near 120 km-h. Bertha is moving northeast at 35 km-h and is located about 1,030 kilometres south of Cape Race, Newfoundland.
