Dylan Riches will be coming home with some hardware.
He fought well enough at the Chito-Ryu karate junior national championships in Saint John, N.B., to capture a bronze medal.
“I was very happy with my performance,” said Riches, a 15-year-old Prince George Chito-Ryu Karate Club member.
Riches earned his way to the medal podium after defeating his Ontario opponent 2-0 in the plus-70-kilogram brown belt class. That followed a close loss to a Quebec fighter in their opening match of the tournament Thursday, which ended Riches’ hopes of winning gold.
“I thought I fought well in my first match, way better than last year, I made such an improvement,” Riches said. “I lost the match, but for the majority, the first minute and a half, I was winning 1-0. Unfortunately I lost it in the last 30 seconds the guy kicked me in the head, which is worth three points, and that put him up 3-1.”
Riches tried to tie the match with a two-point body kick and thought he landed it successfully, but did not get the points from the official. Riches went on to lose 4-1.
The second match was of a rougher nature, and Riches twice got punched in the face by his Ontario opponent.
“I didn’t think it was that bad, but the refs apparently thought it was worse than it was, and gave him a warning,” said Riches. “He fouled me again and they started giving me points for it.”
Riches got through both his matches without fouling.
He will receive his medal today, following the final matches.
