Storm clouds were forming overhead. Down at ground level, the Langley Lightning struck for two quick goals in the second half and denied the Prince George Kodiaks a victory at the B.C. Soccer Association 'A' Cup provincial championship tournament. The game, in the Under-13 girls division, was played Friday afternoon at Rotary Fields and ended 2-1 in favour of Langley. The Kodiaks were up 1-0 at halftime and seemed in position to win. But, in the latter stages of the second half, the Lightning deadlocked the score on a top-corner shot by Jade Elidoros. Moments later, the Kodiaks lost control of the ball in front of their own net and paid the price when Christl Graysen pounced on the giveaway and hammered a shot past helpless goalkeeper Chelsey Cherkas. Just like that, the Kodiaks dropped to 0-2 in the four-team tournament. The Lightning, meanwhile, leveled their record at 1-1. "They make you pay for those mistakes," said Kodiaks head coach Ian Wells. "But we played well. We're proving that we can play at this level of competition. We're not getting beat four and five nothing. We're competing and had the opportunity to win games and that's all we can ask from the girls. "It's a little bit disappointing that we have no results to show for it, but the way we played we should have at least one win right now and possibly a tie," Wells added. "I'm happy with the girls, they way they're playing. They're working well as a team and everybody is giving it their best effort." The Kodiaks lost 2-0 to the Surrey Talons on Thursday, the opening day of provincials. The Lightning dropped their first game to the Semiahmoo Thunder, 2-1. In the Friday game, the Kodiaks carried much of the play in the first half and were rewarded when Emily Warkentin sent a ball past Langley goalie Emily Harold. The play started with a Prince George free kick. The ball ended up at the feet of Warkentin, who used a pretty deke to get past a Lightning defender and then scored low on a left-footed shot. Warkentin was obviously disappointed to lose but was satisfied with her team's performance. "We played really good," she said. "They're a good team and we were really even. It was a fun game to play." The Kodiaks have one more round-robin contest, at 10 a.m. against Semiahmoo. Win or lose, they will play for bronze on Sunday, also at 10 a.m. Today's game against Semiahmoo will be a tough test for the Prince George girls. The Thunder team is the defending B.C. champion and is 2-0 so far this tournament. "Semiahmoo is probably the toughest team here," Wells said. "They're a great team so we have to bring our best game." Semiahmoo defeated Surrey 2-1 on Friday.
