UNBC is hosting the Canadian Society of Soil Science annual conference beginning Sunday and ending Wednesday. The event has attracted more than 180 soil scientists from across Canada and is one of the largest national conferences ever held at UNBC.
Dr. Paul Sanborn, ecosystem science and management professor at UNBC, said the conference is held in a different location each year and this is the first time it's been to UNBC. Registration for the conference is above average and Sanborn said he believes the reason is that those attending have never been to this part of the province before.
Almost 200 sessions will be presented throughout the three day conference. Topics will include: the role of soils for sustainable development, carbon storage in soil, grassland soils and forest soils. Keynote speakers include Suzanne Simard discussing soil ecology, Anne Naeth discussing land reclamation and Stephen Dery discussing snow, soil and climate.
Registration begins Sunday and information sessions run from Monday to Wednesday. Three field trips will be held Thursday, taking visitors to the ancient forest east of Prince George, the Nazko Cone volcanic site west of Quesnel and local farms and ranches to study soil types in that area.
