Re: Union helps apprentice replace tools (Citizen story June 26).
I was reading your story while eating dinner recently and it hit home.
I moved up here almost four years ago. I was kinda having a hard time with the job market and just living in the Lower Mainland. So a friend in Vanderhoof offered a room in his place to try and start out a new life.
I planned to come up here on a fishing trip just to check it out, but last minute my dad advised me not to screw around and just bring my tools and see what happens.
I had $800 in my pocket and an '86 Corolla with a sleeping bag, my rod and a little box filled with tools. I didn't find any work in the 'Hoof so I decided to check out P.G.
My first day applying I got two offers. I took a position at the Subaru dealership and have been there since.
All I can say is I love P.G. I bought a house two years ago, I play on a couple of sports teams, I took up hunting, I got a dog and I got a ton of friends. Life's great.
Anyways, that little toolbox I came up here with fell apart after a few months and I ended up going to Sears and got a pretty good deal on a rollercab and midbox. But last year I outgrew that one too and made a big investment and bought one of those big Snap On boxes.
That night that mill burnt down was a weird day. I was in the garage working on a project and all I could think about was those guys with jobs at the mill and Mackenzie and Fort St. James hurting so bad. The last thing we need is a mill burning down instead of being shutdown. Burning down is just a plain tragedy.
I can't do much to help these guys out, but I do got my old toolbox sitting in my garage not being used.
It's in perfectly good shape. It's a Craftsman locking bottom rollercab with a mid-section. The bottom has six drawers and the mid has two drawers. It's pretty solid like thick wheels, the drawers are slider style and all work great. Like I said, the only reason I got rid of it is because I needed a bigger one.
If one of the millworker union guys needs a toolbox they can have it.
