JASPER, Alta. - A mudslide has cut off a major highway between Alberta and British Columbia.
Mud and rocks are covering a portion of Highway 16, about 70 kilometres west of the Jasper town site in the vicinity of Mount Robson. Denise Walker, a spokeswoman for maintenance crews at the scene, says the slide was sparked by a heavy thunderstorm Tuesday night.
Walker says a helicopter has been assessing the area above the slide to ensure that it's safe for workers to clear the debris.
She says the road may reopen Thursday morning, depending on the speed of the cleanup.
Westbound traffic on Highway 16 is being diverted at Jasper, while eastbound vehicles are being rerouted at Tete Jean Cache, B.C.
