Highway 16 was reopened to single-lane traffic east of Tete Jaune Cache late Wednesday afternoon after three mudslides in Mount Robson Provincial Park forced close of the highway for much of the day. However, rain is forecast, and that may cause a closure again," Ministry of Transportation spokesperson Jeff Knight said. He urged travelers to check the major events section of www.drivebc.ca for updates before heading in that direction. A "very intense storm" triggered the mudslides at about 1 a.m. Wednesday. "The mountain streams were overflowing their banks," Knight said. "There were three spots that were running across the highway, where it brought down water and mud and debris." The slides all occurred fairly close together in the Moose Lake area A geotechnical crew was brought in to make sure it is stable enough for ground crews to go in and clear the highway at the three spots. The highway had been closed from the junction with Highway 5 at Tete Jaune Cache, 266 kilometres east of Prince George, to the B.C.-Alberta border, 79 km. further on and meant those driving to Edmonton or Jasper will have had to take a major detour.
