Re: Left Turn group goes online (Citizen story June 21).
Why is this so hard to figure out? Anyone who has tried to get to the area from the North side of the city has experienced the need to turn around at Ferry Ave via the off and on-ramps for Highway 16 and backtrack, or turn at Hwy 16 and follow the Gateway to Victoria, or take Hwy 16 to Ferry to Upland. None of these routes is direct. And if having to backtrack is frustrating for anyone who works in the Carter light and lives on Borden Crescent, would someone from out-of-town know how to get there?
Tourism Prince George should be very concerned about this lack of access. If someone traveling through the city has reservations at a hotel they can see but can’t get to, what are the chances they keep driving the extra hour to Quesnel? Tourism P.G. loses the room night and the associated spending that goes along with it.
What if our tourist actually finds a way to the hotel, then decides to visit the new casino? Sure they can access the casino via its new left-hand turn lane along Hwy 16, but they can’t get back to their hotel the same way. The residents of the North VLA deserve easy, convenient access to their neighborhood and, if we are a city concerned about tourism, we need to make our city as inviting to tourists as we can to compete for their dollars.
This matter has been sitting in the hands of the local MLA for over seven years now. The Ministry of Transportation, even longer. With current construction plans for the new bridge over the Fraser River, it just makes good sense to include this project now. Traffic studies must have been conducted for this highway in preparation for the new bridge project, so it’s time to stop stalling and start acting.
We the people must ask our elected officials and the employees of the ministry who are paid with our tax dollars to deliver this necessary service. I urge you to visit www.LeftTurnNow.com and fill out a letter to be sent to officials, or contact your local minister’s office. Now is the time.

The casino paid for their left turn access - maybe the business on the north side should get together and pay for their access and not the taxpayer.

I believe the business have offered to pay for the access. At least part of it. Even still, there are left turn lanes in many parts of the city that I'm sure weren't paid directly by the business involved. I've wondered why this wasn't done for many years.

Good point Ruez BUT perhaps the "other" businesses with left hand turn lane access werent complaining as much as these particular ones are now. Therefore i agree, they should pay for their own turning laning as the Treasure Cove did. :)
