BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - An Argentine court has sentenced a former army chief to life in prison for the 1977 kidnapping, torture and killing of four activists.
Luciano Benjamin Menendez was commander of the Third Army Corps in Cordoba for five years during Argentina's 1976-83 military dictatorship.
The 81-year-old has been under house arrest for previous "dirty war" convictions.
The three-judge panel in Cordoba has ordered his transfer to prison.
One of the judges read the verdict on live television.
Seven others were also convicted for the crimes.
Hundreds of people waiting outside the courtroom erupted into cheers as the verdict was read.
Menendez is the latest in a string of convictions of former military officers.
